Politics are usually a sore topic and avoided for this very reason. They lead to arguments over conflicting views and cause tension. But this is something that needs to be talked about! The recent overturning of the Roe V. Wade ruling has left women everywhere in fear and rightfully so.
With Roe V. Wade overturned what is affected?
Women's reproductive rights
The increase of high risk procedures and life threatening abortions
Other rulings that affect our way of life
You may have heard that with this ruling daughters will have less rights than their mothers. It is heartbreaking,... and true.
The less thought about repercussions.
Victims of rape and incest will now be forced to carry their attacker's child to term. This will not only force the victim to have to care for and raise a child they may despise but also provide leverage over the victim for the attacker, mainly a way to keep in contact.
Victims may look towards high risk abortion options or more extreme measures!
Not only is forcing a woman who has endured these atrocities adding to their pain but also morally wrong.
Pro Life Vs Pro Choice
This goes beyond Pro Life and Pro Choice as there are so many factors and repercussions that play into this decision. This a woman's control over her body being taken away.
The common mindset is: "a fetus is a human and has rights". Yet the mother's rights are being stripped.
For those who are Pro Life, I ask you to consider the various factors why a mother may consider abortion as an option.
Funds
Rape/ incest
Health risks to mother
Health risks to child
Unplanned pregnancy
Inability to care for the child
Now you may read some of these and think to yourself, " Well, if that's the case they shouldn't have gotten pregnant/ should have used contraceptives". To that I ask you; are you going to care for the struggling mother's unborn child you are forcing them to go full term with? Are there adequate government funds to aid the mother in feeding, clothing, and finding child care?
Another common "solution" that is presented is adoption.
Adoption
I am a firm believer in adoption, but it also has it's downsides.
Mistreatment
Inability to be adopted
Overflowing fosterhomes
It is a common thought process when potential foster parents visit an adoption center and believe that they are going to pick their "dream child". This thought process is flawed. Rather than going to take home a child that requests nothing but love and affection from their new found "family", these potential parents as shopping for a child.
Adoption is not an opportunity for you to play Build - A - Child.
Adoption is also a hard choice for some families. Adding a child who may have experienced earlier on trauma, has developed high risk behavior due to the choices they have been forced to endure from an early age, and various other factors.
Teenagers are among the least likely to be adopted due to their age, and are more likely to end up spending the majority of their lives in the foster system until aging out.
Potential parents may find themselves confronted with red tape that may prevent them from adopting such as; income, housing, training classes, private or public adoptions, costs. Depending on type of adoption the costs for adoption can be as much as $30,000! Local adoptions are less expensive but may not be what the family is looking for. Adopting a child from overseas is also an option but falls under the category of high expenses for visits, and other fees.
Where does this leave us?
With this ruling, there was a statement made by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas stating that, cases such as Griswold vs. Connecticut (involving married couples and the right to obtain contraceptives), Lawerence vs. Texas (involving the right to engage in private sexual acts), and Obergefell vs. Hodges (involving the right to Same- sex marriage).
If these are "reconsidered" as he stated and overturned the error is in the ruling of the Supreme Court. These ruling were not only made for due to the cases presented but to improve the way of life.
These events bring to mind the sensations book and TV show "A Handmaid's Tale" written by Margaret Atwood and aired as a Hulu original series. A story of low birthing rates which lead to the forming of a society where pretiegious men and their wives are given a handmaid, a woman who has given birth to a healthy child prior to the establishment of this society. This handmaid lives with the couple as a form of maid/ breeder / slave. Did I mention that women are no longer allowed to read or write in this society? Furthermore, there is a ceremony once a month where the husband rapes the handmaid, with his wife present holding the woman down, in order to conceive a child. If a child is conceived it may be allowed to stay with the mother until weaned, and is then no longer allowed any contact with it's birth mother.
Is the connection between the story and the current state of affairs visible? If you don't see it, I ask you take a closer look.
